Abstract
One of the most significant developments in video entertainment
is that of Personalized Video Recording (PVR, also known as Digital Video
Recording, or DVR). This technology enables people to watch what they
want, when they want, with full "pause/fast-forward/reverse" control over
the action. Particularly in European marketplaces, where consumers are
better educated about the benefits and capabilities of DVR, the marketplace
is all but flooded with devices that offer this type of convenience and
control -- with varying degrees of sophistication and success. This paper
examines and compares DVR and DVR-like technologies available in Europe
in terms of their capabilities, potential, advantages and disadvantages
to both consumers and broadband operators.
